Professional Experience

Graduated from Valparaiso University Law School, Valparaiso, Indiana (1974).

Practiced with the Major Felony Bureau of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office handling serious, high-profile felony prosecution (1975-1980).

Developed and directed a nationally recognized task force to investigate and prosecute prison gangs with the Arizona Attorney General’s Organized Crime Division under Attorney General Bob Corbin (1980-1987).

Served as Assistant Chief Counsel and ADOT Unit Chief for the Attorney General’s Insurance Defense Division (1987-1990).

Practiced with the firm of Gallagher and Kennedy; was a founding partner in Junker, Doherty, LaMar and Lucas; then founded his own firm in 1994 focusing on Governmental Entity Tort Defense and select Plaintiff’s complex litigation (1990-2001).

Served as Senior Litigation Counsel for the Civil Division of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

AV-rated in Martindale Hubbel.

Certified by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) as Trial Advocacy Instructor, and has served as a faculty member for the Maricopa County Bar Association.

Has served as Vice Chairman of the ABA Government Liability Section.

Elected by peers to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

1986 Received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for statewide prosecution of prison gangs in Arizona.

2005 Received the Attorney General’s office-wide impact award for work on Defense of Cable barrier Median Crossover cases and Defense of State and Federal cases challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 200.

2007 Received the Attorney General’s “White Hat” award for work in State v. Johnson, et al. (largest Civil Environmental recovery in the history of Arizona ).

 

Civic Leadership and Community Involvement

In 2009 was elected to the Cave Creek Town Council.

Serves as a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Pro Tem.

Since 1986, served five 3-year terms on the Cave Creek Planning and Zoning Commission, including service as Vice Chairman and Chairman. Served on the Board of Directors of the Cave Creek Crossing Association and the Cave Creek Citizens Council.

Was a co-founder and served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity, Desert Foothills.

Served as Valley Big Brother for over a decade. Served as Vice President and President of the Board of Directors for the Valley Big Brothers/Big Sisters during a seven-year term which ended June, 2000. In 1998 selected as the Valley Big Brother of the Year. In 1999 was Big Brothers and Sisters Western States Region Nominee and a Finalist for National Big Brother of the Year.

Member of the Verde Vaqueros, a horseman’s organization dedicated to support of Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club.
